From the Japanese cherry tree to the office

A wood that reddens with the years

These pen holders and pen rests are made from Japanese cherry wood, sakura wood: the pen holder shafts are turned by the Nakamura Woodworks workshop, the pen rests shaped by Arai Woodworks. Kakimori leaves them raw, coats them with wiped urushi lacquer, or has them dyed with Tokushima indigo: the pen rests by Maito Design Works, a dyer based in Kuramae, and the pen holders by Sekino Timber. On each piece, the wood grain remains visible, so no two are exactly alike. Over time, the cherry wood reddens and the color deepens, in rhythm with your hands.

THE EXPERTISE OF THE CHERRY TREE

What this wood brings to these rooms

01

The Japanese cherry tree

These pieces are made from Japanese cherry wood, the wood of the sakura. Its color reddens over time, so the object slowly changes appearance with use.

02

Two woodworking workshops

The pen holder shafts are turned by Nakamura Woodworks and the pen rests shaped by Arai Woodworks, two of Kakimori's partner workshops.

03

A surface that holds ink

The surface is treated with an ink-resistant finish to maintain the piece's functionality without covering the natural wood texture.

04

Fuki-urushi lacquer

On the black versions, the wood is impregnated with urushi lacquer and then wiped. This traditional technique leaves the grain visible under a matte black finish.

05

Tokushima Indigo

The indigo versions are hand-dyed and then finished with beeswax: the pen rests by Maito Design Works, in Kuramae, and the pen holders by Sekino Timber. Very dark at first, they lighten over time with use.

06

Hold, then place

The pen holder is standard size and fits common nibs, sold separately. The pen rest, designed by Makoto Koizumi, features a stable asymmetrical shape that can hold up to three fine pens.
