From wood to the balancing game

Block by block, balance is sought

Building 101 takes a stacking game that everyone knows and turns it into a piece to both look at and handle. The Fujino studio assembles contrasting wood species of different densities, some still retaining their bark. Nothing is perfectly regular, so each block removed shifts the tower’s balance. The Somei Yoshino, Sumida Park version is carved from the wood of aging Somei Yoshino cherry trees from Sumida Park in Tokyo. Each piece is numbered and comes with its brass stand.

THE FUJINO EXPERTISE

What makes this piece unique

01

A classic game revisited

Building 101 takes the concept of the stacking tower and treats it as an interactive piece of art. It fits perfectly on a desk or in a living space.

02

Contrasting essences

The tower combines woods of different densities, with shades and grain patterns that vary from one block to another.

03

The preserved bark

Some blocks keep their bark. The whole thus retains a natural asymmetry and a texture that you can feel under your fingers.

04

A balance to seek

Unequal densities shift the balance with each block removed, and no two parts are ever the same.

05

The cherry trees of Sumida Park

The Somei Yoshino, Sumida Park version is made from the wood of aging Somei Yoshino cherry trees from Sumida Park in Tokyo, as a tribute to these long-maintained trees.

06

Numbered, on its stand

Each piece is a numbered limited edition and includes a brass stand.
