Fountain Pens

What changes from the very first line

The nib doesn’t roll like a ballpoint; it deposits ink by capillarity. The motion becomes lighter, almost silent, and the writing gains texture. Depending on the angle and pressure, the line thickens then thins, and where the ink lingers at the end of a letter, it dries a shade darker. This is called shading, those soft shadows that give character to a simple line. Writing slows the hand down just enough for writing to become a pleasure again, not a chore.

The nib, the material, the filling

Three choices define the character of a pen. First, the nib width. A fine nib keeps writing small, neat, and legible. A medium nib, the most versatile, offers a clear line that makes ink colors sing. A broad nib emphasizes the stroke, beautiful for a signature or flowing handwriting. Next, the material. Turned acrylic, warm and deep in the hand, or brass, dense, which adds weight and presence. Finally, the filling system. The cartridge, immediate and clean, or the converter and piston, which draw ink from a bottle and open the door to hundreds of shades, like those to explore among inks.

For quickly jotting down an appointment on the fly, the ideal companion is elsewhere, among ballpoint and rollerball pens. The fountain pen is reserved for the pages you want to read again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is writing with a fountain pen difficult when you're just starting out?

Less than you might think. The only habit to break is pressing down, because the nib writes under its own weight. A medium nib, forgiving, pardons beginners. In a few pages, the hand finds the angle where it glides smoothly, and writing often becomes more consistent than with a ballpoint pen.

What nib width suits my handwriting?

If you write small and tight, a fine nib keeps letters legible. If you like a bold line and to see ink shading, the medium is for you; it’s the most versatile. A broad nib supports the gesture, ideal for signing or writing large. If in doubt, choose a medium.

Cartridge, converter, or piston, what’s the difference?

The cartridge is a ready-made refill, clean and quick, but limited to the brand’s colors. The converter is a small reservoir that replaces the cartridge and draws ink from a bottle. The piston integrates this reservoir into the pen body, for a larger supply. Both converter and piston give access to all bottled inks.

Why does my ink darken in some places?

That’s shading, one of the charms of the nib. Where the ink accumulates, at the end of a stroke or letter, it dries darker and creates gradients. A medium or broad nib and paper that holds ink well enhance the effect. Some inks go even further and leave a sheen.

Is a fountain pen likely to leak in a bag?

Stored nib up and well capped, it travels without worry. It is mainly pressure or temperature changes that can cause a very full nib to bead. When traveling, a pen that is almost full or almost empty moves less than a half-filled reservoir. Recent models handle this very well.

How to keep a nib that always writes on the first try?

The secret lies in use. A pen that is used often does not dry out. If the ink has hardened after being forgotten, a rinse with warm water will revive it. Rinse also before changing colors, recap after each session, and the nib will respond from the very first line, year after year.
