MORE ABOUT SAITO WOOD
In 1948, Isamu Saito founded “Saito Woodworks” in the village of Ieyama, located in the Shimokawane district, Shizuoka prefecture. In 1956, the company completed the production of a set of boxes using the innovative cylindrical molded plywood technology. Two years later, in 1958, the company moved to the city of Shizuoka and became “Saito Plywood Crafts.”
In 1959, the famous basket “No.901” was finalized, a product that remains iconic to this day. In 1966, the subsidiary “Saito Wood” was created to serve the domestic market. It focuses on selling products to inns, hotels, and restaurants, a business that continues today.
The technique used
Molded plywood is made by layering and gluing wood veneer sheets 0.2 to 1 mm thick, arranged with cross grain, in a mold subjected to pressure and heat. This technique produces a solid, thin, and lightweight curved shape, characteristic of plywood.
