The kasuri of Kurume, according to Okamoto Shoten
The pouches are signed by Okamoto Shoten, a house founded in 1971 in Kurume, Japan, which creates clothing and accessories in Kurume kasuri. In kasuri, the threads are dyed before being woven: the pattern lives within the material, it is never printed on it. This great textile tradition is shaped here for everyday objects.

THE EXPERTISE OF OKAMOTO SHOTEN
What makes these pouches unique
Complexion before being woven
This is the definition of kasuri: the threads are dyed first, then woven. The pattern runs through the fabric instead of being applied on top.
Some thirty steps
Binding, dyeing, weaving: Kurume kasuri requires some thirty steps, and this craft has been recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan since 1957.
Deep bruises
Dots, checks, crosses, arrows and waves come in the classic shades of kasuri: navy, blue and white.
Sewn to serve
Cotton pouches sized for cards, earphones, a charger or small everyday items.
Shapes of today
The designs blend Kurume tradition with modern uses, from desk organizers to portable pouches.
A living tradition
Kurume kasuri is one of Japan's great textile traditions, still alive in the workshops of Fukuoka.
