Blackwing Limited Edition Vol. 2 Pencils (12 Pencils)

Blackwing Volume 2 recognizes that art is a driver of change. It features a unique glow-in-the-dark cracked design and 2X Firm graphite, specially formulated for this edition.

THE HISTORY

In 1973, art found itself at the heart of a cultural turning point. After nearly two decades, the U.S. military had just withdrawn from Vietnam, and the optimism of previous years had given way to uncertainty. Art, even that intended for a broad audience, took a darker turn. The highest-grossing film of 1973, The Exorcist, and the best-selling album, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, offered a glimpse into the cultural landscape of the time.

The following year, a new artistic wave – films like Chinatown and albums like Bob Marley’s Natty Dread – highlighted a broken system and gave us the tools to understand it. Art reflects the world around us and helps us process complex issues so we can move forward. Leonard Cohen once said, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Art creates cracks in the darkest places of the world, letting in the light of knowledge.

Fifty years later, the Blackwing Vol. 2 acknowledges the role of art in change. Each pencil features a glow-in-the-dark cracked design that plays on the duality of art and the harsh realities that inspire it. Each pencil is also equipped with our firmest graphite yet – a specially formulated 2X Firm graphite for this edition.

ABOUT THE BRAND

The Blackwing pencil has a rich history dating back to 1934. In 2008, Palomino acquired the brand and began producing the Blackwing line as we know it today.

Blackwing pencils are renowned for the quality of their graphite and the unique smoothness of their lead. The Blackwing pencil is immediately recognizable by its semi-hexagonal body and interchangeable eraser. The original Blackwing 602 pencil alone inspired the works of some of the greatest artists in history. It is said that Disney animator Shamus Culhane requested to be buried with his Blackwing 602.
