Crayons Blackwing Limited Edition Vol. 2 (12 Crayons)

Volume 2 of Blackwing recognizes that art is a vehicle for change. It features a unique design with a phosphorescent crackle effect and 2X Firm graphite, specially formulated for this edition.

THE STORY

In 1973, art found itself at the heart of a cultural turning point. After nearly two decades, the American military had just withdrawn from Vietnam, and the optimism of previous years had given way to uncertainty. Art, even that aimed at a broad audience, took a darker turn. The highest-grossing film of 1973, The Exorcist, and the best-selling album, The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, provided a glimpse into the cultural landscape of the time.

The following year, a new artistic wave – films like Chinatown and albums like Natty Dread by Bob Marley – shed light on a broken system and gave us the tools to understand it. Art reflects the world around us and helps us grapple with complex issues so that we can move forward. Leonard Cohen once said, "There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in." Art creates cracks in the darkest places of the world, letting in the light of knowledge.

Fifty years later, the Blackwing Vol. 2 acknowledges the role of art in change. Each pencil features a phosphorescent crackled design that plays on the duality of art and the difficult realities that inspire it. Each pencil is also equipped with our firmest graphite to date – a 2X Firm graphite specially formulated for this edition.

ABOUT THE BRAND

The Blackwing pencil has a rich history dating back to 1934. In 2008, Palomino acquired the brand and began producing the Blackwing line as we know it today.

Blackwing pencils are renowned for the quality of their graphite and the unique softness of their lead. The Blackwing pencil is instantly recognizable by its semi-hexagonal body and interchangeable eraser. The original 602 pencil alone inspired the works of some of the greatest artists in history. It is said that Disney animator Shamus Culhane requested to be buried with his Blackwing 602.
